Can electrolysis remove hair in the genital area?
Yes. We may ask whether you are seeking genital hair removal at this time in preparation for gender confirmation surgery and, if so, which surgeon you are working with in order to follow their pre-surgical protocols. It is important to allow sufficient time prior to surgery to complete genital hair removal in order to prevent internal ingrown hairs.

Your Electrologist at Del Mar Skin Care is a Certified Restorative Nurse Assistant and a California State Licensed Electrologist (the most experienced Electrologist in San Diego, licensed since 1981). She is also a California Licensed Esthetician, and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. We are judgement-free, sensitive to your needs and are deeply involved with our San Diego Trans and LGBTQ+ Community.
Everyone’s needs are respected whether you are simply wanting general hair removal or are transitioning with vaginoplasty or phalloplasty, requiring genital hair removal. We recognize that hair removal is an important step in becoming who you are and reconciling your appearance with your true identity.
You may decide you also want hair removed from your face, hairline, eyebrows, ears, nose, arms, back or shoulders. Many of our clients also choose Electrolysis for clearing their chest, abdomen, genitals, under-arms, fingers, legs and toes.
Electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal for all skin tones and all types and colors of hair on all parts of your body. It is the only hair removal process that is approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration for permanent hair removal. At Del Mar Skin Care, we utilize all up to date modalities of Electrolysis such as Thermolysis, Galvanic Current and the Blend Method.
If you are planning surgery, it’s very important to begin your hair removal process well before your surgical date. Many clients choose to begin one and one half or two years ahead of their surgery. Hairs grow in cycles and it’s best to plan well in advance for your electrolysis treatments so you’ll be ready when the big day arrives!
We can schedule appointment times to accommodate your timeline. You may choose to schedule anywhere from thirty minutes to three hours or more per session for your appointments, depending upon your needs.
Of course, we strictly adhere to the sanitation and sterilization regulations of the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. We have a hospital grade autoclave in our studio to insure complete sterilization of our implements.
Gloves and masks are always worn when providing treatments and our probes are single use disposable to insure your safety. Strict sanitation protocols are ongoing as usual, for protection of all our clients.
Many health insurance companies cover Electrolysis treatments. Generally, they will reimburse you for “out of pocket” fees, including the numbing creams. Be sure to check with your insurance company to confirm your coverage and the process for reimbursement.
